Anchored but Unrestricted: Molecular Rotation in Nanocage Cavities

This work demonstrates that a light-driven molecular motor can perform a full unidirectional rotational cycle while confined within a metal–organic nanocage. Stable encapsulation is achieved through a specific hydrogen-bond anchoring interaction rather than size-based host–guest complementarity, allowing rotational motion despite significant conformational changes. Importantly, the confined motor exhibits rotational behavior closely resembling that observed in bulk solution. These findings establish key design principles for integrating molecular motors into confined supramolecular environments without compromising function.
